FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions.
Who owns and manages the farm?
KwaCele Farming (Pty) Ltd is based in the KwaCele/Nhlangwini area of KwaZulu-Natal. It is owned by the KwaCele-Nhlangwini Communal Property Trust, which manages the land for the KwaCele community under the government’s land restitution program.
The farm was originally run in partnership with Crookes Brothers, but in March 2014 the Trust took full control. Today, the business is led by CEO Khethiwe Ngema.
Can community members volunteer or work on the farm?
Yes — members of the KwaCele community work at KwaCele Farming. The farm employs about 300 laborers and 20 management staff, with many positions filled by people from the community. KwaCele Farming is set up as a land-reform project to give locals the chance to train, work, and share in the benefits of the business.
The operation began with support from Crookes Brothers, who provided training and mentorship so the community could eventually manage the farm themselves. This handover to full community control was completed in March 2014.
Today, community members hold important roles in both day-to-day labor and management.
Do you supply to local businesses, markets, or restaurants?
The farm supplies its sugarcane to the Gledhow Sugar Mill in Stanger and its bananas to Nutri Vita. Some smaller-scale produce is also sold to local restaurants and entrepreneurs to help support local businesses.
How can I become a member or support the farm?
Anyone interested in the farm can reach out to us directly or follow our social media pages to see our daily activities.
Do you host community events, markets, or festivals?
On occasion, we host farm visits or farmers’ days to inform both the community and the farming sector about the challenges farmers face during the season. This helps keep people informed and provides updates on any business improvements, challenges, or solutions we may be working on at the time.
Do you use any modern farming technologies, such as AI, drones, or smart irrigation?
Yes, we are constantly exploring and testing improved farming methods — from drone chemical spraying and fertilisation to enhancing soil conditions and various other techniques. Our goal is to better understand our craft and develop smarter, more cost-effective solutions for sustainable farming.
